were stamped on the back of the pickups and stood for “Patent Applied For” when Gibson first patented the design. This pickup was invented by Seth Lover in 1955 when he was working for Gibson. There are several different humbucker pickups, but the most popular has been the Gibson “P.A.F.” style humbucker. The hum-canceling aka “Humbucker” pickups. This hum is what led to the next major development in electric guitar pickups. This can range from being a little bit of background noise to being almost as loud as your playing itself! It gets even worse the closer you are to the interference or if you play with distortion. If you plug a single-coil guitar in near fluorescent or neon lights, you’ll see what I mean! This produces an annoying humming or buzzing noise. Not only do they pick up the vibrations of the guitar’s strings, but they also pick up any electrical interference around them as well. Single coil pickups are great, but they have one major flaw….They hum. These pickups are super popular and have been industry standards ever since. But, the most common ones are the Stratocaster and Telecaster style pickups that Fender introduced in the early to mid-1950s.
Manufacturers have produced many different single-coil pickups made over the years. However, the early single coils sounded great in their own right, and it wasn’t long before musicians started using them to great effect. It would be several more decades until the first decent “acoustic” guitar pickup came onto the scene. In that respect, they failed miserably……. Pickup designers were hoping to perfectly amplify the acoustic sound of these instruments. Solid-body electric guitars weren’t even a thing yet! However, they were most common on early lap-steel and hollow-body guitars. Manufacturers originally fitted single coils to a variety of stringed instruments. These were first introduced way back in the 1920-30s. Single coil pickups are the oldest of all pickup designs. I’ll go over some of the basic history, construction, and benefits of each design so that you can choose the one that’s right for you! In this post, I’ll explain some of the pros and cons of each design in plain English. So what does all this actually mean to you as a player? You’ll probably end up more confused than when you started!
